Student: Jordan Fraser Williams

Study Leader: Bradley Carl Williams

Final Year Project Title: Open Source based ASV (Autonomous Surface Vehicle)

Project Summary:

The Blue Open Ocean Explore (BOO-E), is a proof of concept that serves as a development platform to give decommissioned ASVs and gliders a second life through a low cost and realistic approach. This project aims to democratise access to ocean exploration and relevant studies.

Student's future plans:

My aspirations are to further develop this project alongside industry professionals whilst advancing my skills and knowledge in electrical engineering. This dual approach is aimed to help solidify my position as an engineer with the field of marine applications.

Student: Lize-Mé Otto

Study Leader: Dr. Frederik Hendrik Conradie and Mr Frikkie van der Merwe

Final Year Project Title: Influence of gasifier ask grate design on solids mass flow

Project Summary:

In this study the influence of the geometry of a gasifier ash grate on the particle segregation in a 1/10th scale cold model was examined. Using ImageJTM, particle size distributions and Rosin-Rammler parameters were calculated to compare solids flow under varying conditions . Findings aim to find ways to improve gasifier performance by mitigating segregation induced instabilities through alternative grate geometries.

Student's future plans:

I am thrilled to start an exciting journey into pyrometallurgy by pursuing my masters degree at NWU while working part-time at Metix, a company specialising in submerged arc furnaces.

Student: Thato David Mogaswane

Study Leader: Prof. Lagouge Tartibu

Final Year Project Title: Development of a robotic arm using generative design

Project Summary:

The design of a lightweight and cost-effective robotic arm using generative design approach is explored. Artificial intelligence is adopted to optimize structural integrity, ultimately achieving a 24% reduction in weight while maintaining safety, showcasing the potential of innovative engineering solutions.

Student's future plans:

Beginning of 2025, I will work with Samancor Chrome, focusing on developing my mechanical engineering skills in a mining environment. My long-term goals include earning a master’s and eventually a PhD, allowing me to contribute to scientific research in engineering and fulfill my passion for teaching and academia.

Student: Hamza Ahmed

Study Leader: Prof. David Lokhat

Final Year Project Title: Preparation of porous iron oxide nanoparticles doped with caesium for low temperature ammonia synthesis

Project Summary:

In this project the student had to prepare samples of porous iron oxide catalysts doped with caesium and to test these catalysts for low temperature green ammonia synthesis. He also had to commission a fixed bed reactor system for the experiments and devise a method of ammonia quantification.

Student's future plans:

The student is interested in pursuing his MSc Engineering degree at UKZN, particularly in the area of advanced materials for water treatment. He is keen on becoming a professional engineer and working in the field of water and sanitation.

Student: Michael Mackenzie Craig

Study Leader: Prof Jaco Dirker

Final Year Project Title: The influence of aspect ratio on the melting of a cylindrical latent heat storage system

Project Summary:

The project investigated the melting process of a phase change material in a cylindrical enclosure to determine the influence that cylinder aspect ratio has on the melting process and heat transfer mechanisms. An experimental investigation was performed, the results of which were used to validate the numerical model.

Student's future plans:

I am moving to the Netherlands at the start of 2025 where I will be pursuing an honour’s/master’s degree as well as possible employment opportunities in the renewable energy industry.

Student: K Moonsamy

Study Leader: Zwonaka Mapholi

Final Year Project Title: Dynamic bioprocess analysis of Rhodopseudomonas palustris’s photo-temperature-glycerol dependent biohydrogen production.

Project Summary:

The project develops a mechanistic model for optimizing biohydrogen production. Combining experimental and modeling approaches, it identifies environmental conditions enhancing biomass growth and hydrogen yields. This innovative research has significant potential for advancing sustainable energy solutions globally.

Student's future plans:

Pursuing a master’s degree in chemical engineering next year focusing on the production of hydrogen from renewable resources. I plan on addressing the shortcomings of my final year project, expanding on the developed mechanistic models. Thereafter work in the energy industry to address the energy crisis.

Student: Bandile Makha and Monty Prince Thovhakale

Study Leader: Dr Precious Biyela

Final Year Project Title: The environmental impacts and benefits of substituting coal with biochar in South African coal-fired power plants

Project Summary:

This research explores substituting coal with biochar produced from sewage sludge, woodchips, and their mixture in power plants. Analyzing ash content, sulfur content, and calorific value, amongst other parameters, results showcase biochar's potential as a cleaner, sustainable fuel for South Africa's energy transition.

Student's future plans:

Bandile: I intend to join the industry as a consulting engineering while pursuing my MSc in Civil engineering.

Monty: From next year, I will be pursuing a career in engineering consulting with plans to do my master's in a couple of years.

Student: Sbusiso Kennold Makhubela

Study Leader: Prof. George Ochieng

Final Year Project Title: Integration of Python-based Data Analysis for Improved Stormwater Management in Protea Glen

Project Summary:

The study developed an approach to address flood hazard assessment by combining the computational power of Python with advanced GIS techniques to create a user-interactive, real-time flood simulation model. This model early warning systems and provided enhanced capabilities for hazard assessment.

Student's future plans:

Sbusiso Makhubela plans to pursue a MEng degree from next year, focusing on using AI and Earth observation to create tools for sustainable water management. He wants to specialize in stormwater, flood prediction, and water resource planning. He also aims to teach and mentor the next generation of engineers.
